Postal Collection Boxes Removed in Long Island Suburb

Who would have thought that the venerable red & blue collection boxes would be subject to seemingly arbitrary removal. Maybe, arbitrary is a bit strong, but as we being edged to centralized delivery of our mail, the Fort's sole(?) collection box is a candidate for removal.
While it is certainly very easy and convenient to leave the outgoing mail in your mailbox for pickup by the mail carrier, it is relatively unsecured. Many people covet the security and confidence that goes along with the old "red & blue" boxes.

Many Saint Michael's College students live in dorms at Fort Ethan Allen. The Echo is the on-line college student publication which often has articles relating to their experiences living at Fort Ethan Allen.
According to one student article, St. Mike's owns 22 buildings at The Fort.
Dalton Drive & US Postal Service
Alas, it seems that the Dalton Drive Neighborhood Association is faced with the prospect of the US Postal Service insisting on the ugly silver boxes to replace the letter carriers hand delivering mail to boxes conveniently located near each unit. Basically, the Postal Service wants to have a central location for all of the mail delivery for our 77 units.
Sigh...I do love having the mail delivered to a mailbox in the foyer of our building protected from the elements. Retreiving your mail wearing shorts & a t-shirt is quite comfortable even in the winter. However, that era is waning. The era of home delivery of our mail to our actual home is in its twilight.
I do not feel that this is a fight that we can necessary win nor perhaps should we win. The cost of mail delivery is increasing along with the pressure on the USPS to drive their costs down. Letter carrier safety is an issue given our icy and often snow covered walkways.
Perhaps, there is a compromise. We certainly do not want to lose the battle completely and have to place the delivery boxes at one end with DDNA bearing the entire project cost. In the past, the USPS has offered to purchase these boxes if we move quickly to this type of mail delivery. I suggest that we locate all of the boxes in a central location covered by a roof, The Garages That We Own. These aggregated mailboxes would be protected from the elements, centrally located with respect to the unit owners and should be easy to maintain a clear path during the winter months.

The Colors are flying high again!
Due to joint contributions from both towns of Essex and Colchester, The Fort has a new flag flying high & proudly over the parade grounds again. The previous flag will be retired properly.
US Flag Code is documented in US Code website maintained by the US Government Printing Office (GPO).
FYI, the GPO website, as a general resource on offical government documents and publications, is quite good.

The Flag will Return!
As some of you have noticed, the Flag is not flying. Unfortunately, the "wear & tear" became mostly "tear" and it would have been inappropriate to raise a flag in that condition.
I have been informed that a new flag is on the way!
Soon, the "Stars & Stripes" will be flying over the The Fort's parade grounds once again.
